A Taste of Home: Exploring Our East African Menu

The entire idea for African Soul Food started with a longing for the flavors of East Africa. We wanted to create a home for those flavors here in Atlanta, and we are so proud to share them with you. Our menu is a celebration of the dishes we grew up with, cooked authentically to remind you of the taste of home.

When we opened, we brought in all the beloved classics. You will find hearty, comforting ugali and flavorful pilow (pilau). We also serve G Mimo and are thrilled that our fish has become one of our bestselling items. But the experience doesn’t stop there. Our guests have fallen in love with our starters and sides. We’ve heard from customers that their colleagues at work love the samosas, and others have told us they personally like the mandis (mandazi).

What makes the food special? According to our customers, it’s the authentic and very delicious taste. One guest said our food has got a lot of flavor and the spicing is just correct. In a world of food that can tend to be very bland, as one customer put it, we are proud to serve dishes that are vibrant and satisfying.

This is the food that started it all. Caroline first found success by bringing a tray of food with her to events, and we’ve stayed true to those roots. Outside catering is still our best service because that’s where it came from. We love catering for birthdays, churches, and graduations. It’s not just Kenyans enjoying this food, either. Everybody has opened into this space, including Americans, the white, the black, everybody’s coming to try. We were so happy when we just served a school today that was doing African cuisine, and they were very happy.

We’ve also been honored to have a couple of celebrities here. We’ve hosted prominent Kenyans like Sauti Sol and Nameless. We even had a big party here for Ferdinand Omanyala, the fastest man in Africa. It was a big party; we had almost 150 people here. When you eat from our East African menu, you’re tasting dishes that are cooked from the soul. We cook with love, and we believe you can taste the difference in every bite.
